CONCLUSION: This case suggests i) the need to carry out any possible detailed studies of the circumstances and exposure sources whenever any mesothelioma case is classified as "asbestos exposure unknown", according to the guidelines of the National Mesothelioma Register, ii) handling of DAS paste can be considered as sure asbestos exposure and iii) it should be borne in mind that mesothelioma cases can occur even after cumulative low, occupational exposure, even only to chrysotile. MM is an immunological cancer, therefore autoantibodies may be suitable biomarkers and associated with prognosis. We used Protoarray(®) microarrays to determine immune responses to 8798 antigens in 10 MM and 10 asbestos exposed controls and developed diagnostic panels using 17 antigens from this. The AUC of these panels were independently tested in these 10 MM patients and controls and in a validation group of 36 controls and 35 MM patients using luminex assays; none of the antigens identified were validated. CONCLUSION: Loss of BAP1 expression is an indicator of MMD in a context of mesothelial proliferation. This immunohistochemistry could be integrated in the panel of immunostaining used for MMD diagnosis, either on histological or cytological samples. [Metastasis revealing malignant peritoneum mesothelioma: About the difficulty to identify the primary tumors].

We report two cases of metastatic malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. In one case, malignant metastatic cells were identified in cervical lymph nodes while in the other case, the cells were found in the liver. In both cases, metastases were identified before discovering the primary tumor. This led to the misdiagnosis of carcinoma of unknown origin. Nevertheless, the histological and immuno-histochemical patterns were typical of malignant mesothelioma. Regarding metastasis of unknown origin, a differentiation of epithelioid peritoneal malignant mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma proved to be difficult. Therefore, we discuss the diagnostic usefulness of immuno-histochemical mesothelioma markers. EnPro Industries has agreed to establish a $480 million trust fund to settle all current and future asbestos claims against subsidiary Garlock Sealing Technologies, which filed for bankruptcy in 2010. Lambert et al1 report on the relationship between exposure to elongate mineral particles (EMPs) and the incidence of mesothelioma among Minnesota iron ore miners. In a previous study, mesothelioma mortality was found to be increased among workers employed in the Minnesota mining industry.2 Based on 30 observed deaths, a standardised mortality ratio (SMR) of 2.77 with a 95% CI of 1.87 to 3.96 was found among the 31 067 workers most likely engaged in taconite mining and refining, as opposed to haematite mining. Taconite, but not haematite, mining and processing is known to entail exposure to non-asbestiform amphibole and non-amphibole EMPs (predominantly). Influence of AQP1 on cell adhesion, migration, and tumor sphere formation in malignant pleural mesothelioma is substratum- and histological-type dependent

In this study we aimed at evaluating the role of AQP1 in cell adhesion, migration, and tumor sphere formation in nonmalignant mesothelial cells (MeT-5A) and in epithelioid (M14K) and sarcomatoid (ZL34) MPM cell lines. We used fibronectin (FN) or homologous cell-derived extracellular martrix (ECM) substratum to investigate the role of AQP1 in these experimental phenotypes, inhibiting AQP1 by 10–5 M mercury chloride (MC). Deposited ECM during cell culture exhibited significant concentration differences among cell types. ZL34 cell adhesion was significantly higher than MeT-5A or M14K cells on FN and ECM. MesobanK UK: an international mesothelioma bioresource

Malignant pleural mesothelioma causes the greatest societal burden of all the asbestos-related diseases. Progress in better understanding tumour biology will be facilitated by the availability of quality-assured annotated tissue. MesobanK has been created to establish a bioresource of pleural mesothelioma tissue linked to detailed anonymised clinical data. When complete, the bioresource will comprise a 750-patient tissue microarray and prospectively collected tissue, blood and pleural fluid from 300 patients with mesothelioma.
