<span style="font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial">Like the preceding two months, the US jobs report for October that was released on Friday morning disappointed expectations. However, the reading still fell within reasonable range of forecasts, showing a relatively solid and stable employment picture that is unlikely to change the expected interest rate trajectory of the Federal Reserve. In addition, a few upside surprises in the report helped to reinforce both the current steadiness of the US economy and the rationale for a December Fed rate hike. Now that the jobs report is out of the way, though, the one immediate event that could very well impact the Fed's interest rate considerations, as well as the direction of the financial markets, is the US presidential election coming up on Tuesday....<br />

The headline non-farm payrolls employment change for October came out at 161,000 jobs added against 175,000 expected. This fell on the lower end of the 160,000-180,000 range that we projected prior to the release. The US unemployment rate was also slightly worse than expected, ticking up to 5.0% against expectations of 4.9%. The increase in average hourly earnings remained constant at 0.2%, as expected. Alongside the headline disappointment, a somewhat brighter spot in the report saw an upward revision of August's job creation from the previous 151,000 up to a revised 167,000...<br />

<span style="font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial">The US employment situation, along with the probability of a Fed rate hike in September, took a downturn on Friday when non-farm payrolls (NFP) data released by the US Labor Department showed that a relatively disappointing 151,000 jobs were added in August against previous consensus expectations of around 180,000. This substantial miss in employment data follows two stellar months of much better-than-expected readings, and significantly trails the average monthly gain of 204,000 jobs over the prior 12 months. Friday's data continues a trend of the past five years in which August jobs data has disappointed expectations each and every year.<br />

Also disappointing were two other primary data points released concurrently - average hourly earnings and the unemployment rate for August. The week started with a paper released by San Francisco Fed President John Williams detailing his mostly-dovish leanings that appeared to oppose a near-term Fed rate hike. May's data was revised down from an already-dismal 38,000 to an even worse 11,000. The unemployment rate in June rose to 4.9% against the 4.8% expected, offsetting May's better-than-expected 4.7%. Average hourly earnings also fell short of expectations, increasing by only 0.1% in June vs. forecasts of 0.2%.<br />

<span style="font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial">The headline US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) number for April came in on Friday at 160,000 jobs added vs prior consensus forecasts of around 200,000. The April number was down considerably from the unrevised 215,000 jobs added in the previous month of March. This very substantial disappointment in the employment picture rather accurately mirrors the ADP employment report that was released just two days earlier, which came in at 156,000 jobs added in April vs prior expectations also around 200,000. Despite both the unemployment rate and the change in average hourly earnings remaining steady and as expected on Friday at 5.0% and +0.3%, respectively, the plunge in the actual number of NFP jobs added from prior months potentially foreshadows an even lower probability of further near-term rate hikes by an already-dovish Federal Reserve.<br />
