China's economy came off the boil in the first quarter posting GDP growth of just 6.7% – its slowest in seven years but right on target. The growth number was in line with expectations and it helped to ease fears of a hard landing. However the figure dampened hopes that Beijing would step in with added stimulus steps and shares retreated in Shanghai as a result. Meanwhile China watchers suspect Beijing of manipulating such data to match its policy goals.
